Defects in Timber (or) Timber Defects:

 



Timber is a natural product, and every natural product has some imperfections. Most of the defects in timber cause weakness or other sorts of difficulties. However, some defects can be beneficial for a specific type of work. Twisted wood is good for making a bowl. Timber available in many critical stages like growing without defects, cutting at the right time, seasoning, converting and using. In General, the Defects are Occurring due to the following reasons:

  1. Natural Forces
  2. Fungi
  3. During Seasoning
  4. During Conversion
  5. Insects

Defects in Timber causes due to natural forces:

  1. Wind Cracks, shakes, twisted fibres, upsets, Rind galls, Burls, Water Stain, Chemical stain, Deadwood, knots, 

Defects in Timber occurs due to Fungi: 

  1. Dry rot, Wet rot, White rot, Brown rot, Blue stain, Heart rot, Sap Stain.

Defects in Timber occurs due to seasoning:

  1. Bow, Cup, Check, Split, Twist, Honeyclimbing, Case hardening, Collapse, Wrap, Radial Shakes.

Defects in Timber occurs due to conversion:

  1. Diagonal grain, torn grain, chip mark, wane

Defects in Timber causes due to insects:

  1. Termites, Beetles, Marine borers
